New Developments in the International
Automobile Industry
The China-ASEAN Expo to be held in Nanning, the
capital of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region,
is a sign that the economic cooperation between
China and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations
(ASEAN) has entered a brand-new stage of development,
and that the prospects for China’s automobile
industry are brighter than ever. As the only coastal,
frontier and riverside ethnic-minority autonomous
region of China, Guangxi is adjacent to Hong Kong
and Macao, faces Southeast Asia, and has 16 first-class
ports, including 12 land frontier ports. Relying
on these strong points, Guangxi has effectively
integrated the economic advantages of South China
with the energy advantages of Southwest China,
to enhance its development. Along with the establishment
of the China-ASEAN free trade zone, the development
of international automobiles will surely scale
new heights.
The Automobile Market with the Most
Potential in Southwest China
In recent years, Guangxi’s economy has developed
rapidly. In 2003, its GNP reached 273.321 billion
yuan, an increase of 10.2 percent over that
of the precious year. Guangxi has good transportation
facilities, and its highways open to traffic
total 51,000 kilometers or so, including over
3,000 kilometers of high-class highways, leading
the country. The favorable development tendency
has made Guangxi’s production and sales of automobiles
brisk. In 2003, Guangxi sold 240,000 automobiles,
making up 5.4 percent of the nation’s total
output, or an increase of 33.2 percent over
that of the previous year; the retail sales
volume of automobile-related products grew by
90.2 percent; and the retail sales volume of
cars increased by 144.0 percent.
